Woof!
Love and Licks to all my friends, how is your summer going? I spend mine lounging and napping with my brothers and sister (and fighting over the one remaining cow hoof). I'm all tuckered out!
My Mistress is busy with
her business, and getting through all the details and preparations for her upcoming Wedding Reception. She's still recovering from surgery, so life is less hectic then her normal hummingbird movements....more on that later.
Some have asked how I was named Nathan...Mistress drove 5 hours to attend a funeral, and at the after funeral gathering I was being passed from arms to arms - no name, no home. Mistress asked, "who's the baby?", and my 3-lb self fell in love and I went home with her - all 5 hours of driving I slept on the back of her neck! After we arrived, I had to go to Tami's house while Mistress took care of out-of-town business. While she was away, Mistress called every day to see how things were. "Oscar and Katie are playing together really cute", Tami would say. "Oscar?" "Yup, because he's a wiener dawg", Tami answered. "Well, if we have to name him after a hot dog, make it a good one - Nathan!". That is how I was named Nathan. A better name for me would be "stinker", "cunning", "ants in pants", or "trouble maker"...!

Woof!
It's warm today, and it's going to be very hot tomorrow (mid-90's), and we don't have air conditioning. When our home was built 30-some years ago, it didn't get this hot. I suppose Mistress could install air conditioning, but she prefers to put her money into Her Pet Business, helping rescues, and buying us treats! I digress...no air conditioning means we have to try to stay cool and be careful. My Mistress wanted to share these tips with you - Ice cubes help too!... Luv & Licks, Nathan, The Dachshund
1.) exercise your dog early in the morning or late at night.
Since these are the cooler parts of the day, this will make the
walk more comfortable for both you and your dog. I'm a believer in vigorous exercise for healthy dogs, but this is the time of year to back off on exercise intensity.
2.) Use doggie boots.
You can find these at your local pet supply store. If you can't walk your dog during the early and later hours of the day, this is a good way of protecting him. Heat rises from the ground, especially on surfaces like cement and asphalt, and dogs absorb and release heat through their feet. Just like boots prevent the dog from absorbing the cold in the winter, they also isolate heat.
3.) Watch for signs of dehydration.
Dogs can't sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot, and it may appear a little pale. If you lift its
skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place.
4.) Keep your dog hydrated!
Different dogs have different needs when battling the heat. Keep in mind that darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher risk for dehydration. Carry a bottle of water when going on a walk with your dog. Better yet have your dog carry it for you in a backpack or a vest! The water in the bottles will keep the dog cooler and also give the dog a sense of purpose.
5.) Find innovative ways to cool your dog.
Don't have air conditioning? No problem! Find a spot in the shade and set up a kiddie pool. Lay down a wet towel for your dog to lie on. Or simply set up a fan in front of a pan of ice. At the Dog Psychology Center, we have sprinklers that spray the dogs with a gentle mist of water.
6.) Dogs cool from the bottom up.
Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when spraying it with water. A wet towel does more good on the bottom of your dog than when laid on the top of its coat.
7.) Let your dog dig!
Your dog may resort to finding his own way to avoid the heat. Dog in nature dig their dens not out of frustration but to find food, hide, give birth--or keep cool! If it's possible, locate a shady area where it's okay for your dog to dig.
8.) Let your dog check the weather.
Dogs don't have the Weather Channel, so they don't know why they are being denied a long walk for the day. Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it is too hot, too wet, or too cold to go on a long walk. Instinctually, the dog will understand that it has to shorten its walk, or simply come back inside where it's safe.
9.) Never leave your dog in a parked car.
The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it is in the shade. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car due to passersby or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely. On longer trips, make sure you have water for the dog and keep the AC running.
10.) Use hot weather as an excuse to swim more often!
The best activity you can do in summertime or hot weather is swimming. Instead of walking the dog, take the dog on a swim! If you hold on and allow your dog to take you around the pool, it becomes a powerful bonding experience for the two of you, similar to the walk.

Woofie!!
Mistress is still recovering from a total hip replacement, AND a torn rotator cuff (tripped and fell), but it's her way to keep going! It's been 5 months since surgery, and although her energy level isn't "normal" yet, it hasn't stopped her from getting ready for HER WEDDING in August! In the morning there's such a flurry of activity, and in the afternoon there's sprawling on the bed together napping. We love this recovery thang! She made her own invitations and Dachshunds are front and center! Comments have been, "I love them! Where did you get them?" to, "I can say in all my 70+ years, I've never seen dogs on a wedding invitation!" What do you think?

Mistress finished the pantry yesterday, so today is a rest day! What inspired her? No place to put things because our Master loves the floor instead of shelves. We're not sure why since he's almost 6' tall, but the project started because of this:

| A Really Bad Day! |
Mistress found this when she entered the kitchen to make coffee and said some bad words. Me? I was twirling in glee and Sascha had eaten so much her belly looked like a soccer ball! She's already a chub, no worries, my brothers and I love thick women! Mistress had to clean the mess up BEFORE coffee, and we had to go outside! Nobody was happy that morning, that's for sure, but Mistress gave us cow hoofs to chew on (so we'd leave her alone). Mistress left for awhile and came home with storage jars and big baskets...we finally saw a happy face. Of course that prompted us to beg her to let us in - that's me speaking the bop bop woofie language:

The pantry is organized, and our "stuff" is front and center! No Pet Pawties in A Box work today, so it's my Saturday as a Creative Director, but yesterday we designed a Bandana for a 3-legged rescue in Illinois! We're waiting for a picture to post in our store!

Woofie, My Friends...
Today is a day all us Dachshunds are getting a big kick out of - Our Mistress is attempting to organize the kitchen and pantry after Louis has been in charge for TWO YEARS! It's not a pretty sight, and one that may be too early after surgery for Mistress to attempt. It started after Mistress fed us breakfast, washed up, and decided to put away the varied (covered with yuck) items that were scattered around the kitchen counters. The kitchen has a large, walk-in pantry where "walk-in" is no longer a possibility. Louis loves the floor - more than tables or chairs - and if he can't figure it out (and even if he can) - it's put there. Now, don't get me wrong, my brothers and sister love this habit of his because putting things on the floor includes groceries! This picture of a visitor, Stewie, Happy to get into anything!
The pantry is now empty, and Mistress is exhausted, but there's NO place to sit because EVERY surface is covered with stuff - piles and piles of stuff - stuff that hasn't been seen FOR YEARS! We've been happy because food particles kept falling, and before Mistress could sweep them up - we ate them! Mistress relaxed once she realized a whole box of cheerios had spilled and we were eating them up! *Phew*, no chocolate chips! Got milk?
Now, we're napping and then we're off to the park. Mistress whispered in my ear that we can't do more until we visit BedBathandBeyond for organizational baskets, etc....We're happy for the excuse! It looks like a long week finishing this project, but we'll have to make

Dear Friends,
Where have I been? I can't believe it's been almost a year since I blogged! It was around this time in 2011 that my Mistress, Elizabeth, became more disabled from an injury she had 15 years ago! Arthritis was the culprit and ate up her hip preventing her from walking, driving, and sitting for very long. Pet Pawties In A Box (
http://www.petpawtiesinabox.com) suffered too - we all did because our walks stopped!
Good News! Surgery (total hip replacement) has been successful and she's doing much better. My brothers, Dachshunds Roo and Buddy, and my sister, Sascha, even went to the park recently! Poor Buddy, he's turning 17 years old in July and Arthritis is affecting his hips too - he tries to be young, but is moving slower...
We're getting ready for a big pawty in August, and it's going to be so much fun! Mistress has hired a jazz trio, a chef, is remodeling the guest bathroom, and is back on the computer shopping! We all get to sit at her feet and lick her ankles. She's working on re-opening the store with new doggie and kitty stuff - life is much more exciting!
